What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is part of Chinese medicine, a complete healing system which originated in Chine more than 2ooo years ago. Acupuncture applies traditional Chinese medical theory to the diagnosis and treatment of illness, the improvement of well-being, and the prevention of disease by inserting acupuncture needles at various places on the body.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
According to Chinese medical theory, energy or `Qi` (`chee`) courses the body's surface along regular channels called meridians which nourish and regulate the functions of the body. When energy flows normally in these meridians, there is health and vitality. When energy is blocked or lessened, pain and/or illness result. Needling acupuncture points normalizes the flow of qi and thus corrects internal imbalances in the body.
A more scientific explanation of acupuncture (since I worked at the NIH doing research for several years in undergrad I understand how important it is to put this in) is that trigger points are stimulated using acupuncture and this affects the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, thereby affecting endocrine and vascular physiology and the brain’s chemistry and the body’s production of endorphins.
Is Acupuncture Painful
Many people have some fear of acupuncture to start, but are pleasantly surprised by the treatment itself. Rather than using large needles like are used for injections, acupuncture needles are as thin as a human hair and there is little or no discomfort on insertion. Some transient, therapeutic sensations frequently follow acupuncture needle insertion and are experienced as: distention, euphoria, numbness, tingling, or heaviness.
Clean needle technique and quality disposable needles are used for every treatment.
How Many Treatments Will You Need?
As you might suspect, since each person is unique there is no pat answer here. Treatment duration and total number of treatments depend on the nature, severity and history of the person’s complaint, as well as their health in general. Treatment times vary and usually start with 1-2 times per week. Many conditions are alleviated fairly rapidly with acupuncture and potentially other treatments available at eh clinic. Chronic conditions take longer than acute ones to heal.
Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture?
Some health policies cover or partly cover acupuncture therapy. You should contact your insurance provider to verify coverage at this office. You may also contact us to discuss the specifics of your situation.
What Can You Expect On Your First Visit?
During your first visit you can expect to receive great care at Acupractic. For acupuncture treatments, you will fill out initial history paperwork and then spend some time discussing your history with the doctor. Physical examination of tongue and pulse will be made, and palpation of involved areas. A diagnosis will be made and treatment appropriate treatment given using one or more of the following:
-
Acupuncture with needles: thin, sterile needles are placed in specific acupoints in a painless manner until a small, relaxing sensation is achieved
-
Electro-stimulation: transcutaneous electro-nerve stimulation-like device is applied to acupuncture needles in order to enhance point stimulation, usually for pain or muscle spasm
-
Moxibustion: Chinese herb mugwort (Artemis Vulgara) is rolled into a cigar-like stick to burn above the acupoint to pleasantly warm the point and regulate qi.
-
Massage: Therapeutic massage and bodywork techniques are used to reduce muscle spasm and loosen adhesions. Gua Sha, a scraping massage, may be used to increase blood flow and release the exterior.
